I used to watched Pokémon and YGO with my mom; she didn't really think too much of either, but she did appreciate when they tried to teach some moral--Mewtwo Returns was definitely one of those! I think it would be a good one to show!

And yeaaah, your dad sounds a lot like mine--thinking anything animated is automatically worthless. Sigh...
