Yay!
The plushie is finished! http://meromeroyui.deviantart.com
And the DVDs came. I've already re-watched several Battle City episodes again and a couple of season 5 episodes. LOL, I ended up watching the Yami Marik/Yami Bakura duel twice. There's a lot of classic stuff in those episodes: Yami Bakura saving Rishid, his arguing with Marik, Marik's announcing that he knows the truth about the past and wants to make good, Yami Marik deciding he's complete without Marik, the debut of more of Ra's special abilities, and it's just plain fun to have an occasion where one can actually root for Yami Bakura's victory (even though he fails).
I was thinking that it's interesting how the antagonists seem to take each other out in season 2. First you have Bonz and his friends, who are cheaters and bullies but not much worse, and they get taken out by Yami Bakura. (I like to think they come back after his defeat later that night, though.) Then Yami Bakura, who is of course far worse than those small fry, gets taken out by the even worse Yami Marik. And then there's the whole Zorc mess and the pondering of who really is worse between those Yamis, since in one way it seems like Yami Marik pales in comparison to Yami Bakura's true danger. Interesting how Yami Bakura was usually dismissed or at least not thought of as the biggest threat, and then in the final season he becomes the Big Bad. On the other hand, Yami Bakura has a human side in Thief King Bakura, so he has the potential for good, as all humans do, while Yami Marik is completely evil and has no potential to be anything else.
Also starting thinking that since Yami Marik was created from the darkness in a heart, he probably has the potential to eventually either summon Zorc or become powerful enough to become another Zorc. I'm strongly considering that the battle in which Yami Bakura has to prove himself is a battle against Yami Marik having become Zorc, Version 2.0. (And no, he will not be able to change his appearance to look like Zorc. Blech!) I don't know if I will ever actually write that story, because it will be the end of an era and I like the conflict in my verse of Yami Bakura trying to master the Infinity Ring and wondering about the conflict and trying to be good even though it's hard for him. (And sometimes still having an idea of what justice is that others might not agree with....) But I may write a blurb just to test the idea. Of course, if I like that enough, then I probably will want to write that story.
One thing I struggle with is having enough of Yami Bakura's attitudes change so that he can be more believably good, yet still struggle with things like anger and hatred and justice. I think I did really good with that when I wrote White is in the Winter Night and Taming the Darkness, but I'm worried whether I've lost my touch now. I don't want him to go completely soft; he needs to have a dark edge even though Bakura has restored his sanity and his driving hatred has faded. (Mostly now, he gets hateful if Bakura is threatened. And he hasn't forgiven Ahknadin, but he isn't trying to actively do anything about it.) Of course, in the timeline several months have passed since Taming the Darkness, and Yami Bakura has apparently been more sober and subdued since then, in some ways. That's certainly understandable, but I want him to get a little more back to the characterization from nine years ago. I'm trying to show both his mischievous side and his rage-driven side in the current story, and somehow balance that with a gruff yet protective side willing to open up to Bakura about his past.
I looked through some of my manga again, reaffirmed I prefer the anime versions of the characters, and pondered a bit. One interesting difference between the anime and manga Yami Bakura is that the anime version certainly isn't anywhere as masochistic. The manga version actually tells Yami Marik that he likes being eaten by the shadows, WTH. In the anime, he clearly doesn't like it. Regardless of what he actually said in the Japanese, you can see from his expression that he is seriously ticked off about it. (That, and Yu-Jyo doesn't mention him saying anything masochistic there, and if he had, it seems like that would be something they would have mentioned.) Also, I find it highly amusing and enjoyable that he's always calling Yami Marik "fiend" or "demon." With the usage of those terms, it almost seems as though the scriptwriters wanted the audience to root for Yami Bakura there by using those terms to indicate Yami Marik is worse and that in this case, Yami Bakura is the hero (or antihero, more likely). Interesting, considering that he himself is part Zorc at this point. It would seem to be Thief King in control there, since he's clearly using the terms negatively and it's doubtful Zorc would. LOL.
Now that the plushie is finished, I need to try taking pictures and making icons. Or even trying that music video, if I want to give that a go. I would definitely like a Yami Bakura icon. Another problem, though, is that as always, I'd like one of him and Bakura together, and unless I go try to dig up that scene of them together from the Toei series, try scanning and coloring that manga panel of Yami Bakura shielding Bakura's spirit, or go find some fanart, I probably can't have such an icon. Or ... hmm, there is that one shot from the season 2 opening, but that wasn't exactly what I wanted either. I have some lovely fanart, and one has been my icon on Trillian for years, but since it's fanart and I don't have the artists' permission, I don't like to use it publicly as icons. The only people who see it on Trillian are close friends. (And I don't even really use Trillian anymore, since Skype won't work on it and Yahoo and AOL Messengers are kaput in various ways.) Maybe I can come up with something similar to my Schrank and Krupke icon, as far as design goes. I'll have to think about it. I can't make really fancy icons. If I could, I could easily figure out a way to have Bakura and Yami Bakura together.
