Which to start with....
Still debating what movie-length Pokemon thing to try showing Mom first. I had thought she might really like the third movie, but upon re-watching it again, I think it would be way too confusing to show her as her first real exposure to things other than some clips. She might not get the thing with Entei not really being the father, at least not until it was finally explained later about the Unown tapping into Molly's dreams. And the thing with Delia being kidnapped as the mother might confuse her. Maybe not, but I'm thinking it would be better to save the third movie for after she's seen some other stuff. The third movie also had quite a few Pokemon battles and I don't know how she'd take any of that.
I definitely would like to show her the Lucario movie. I think she would really like it and it would be easy for her to follow.
I'm still really thinking I want to show her the second movie before any others, though. There's something simple about its plot, and yet it's so intense and meaningful. And it's the best thing to show for Team Rocket content. Of course, there's the long and intense battle between the birds and such, but that's different than standard Pokemon battles and it's treated as something very concerning. And the birds are all okay, so that might go over alright.
I'm wondering if she would need to see the first movie before seeing Mewtwo Returns. There is that nice recap at the beginning, so maybe it wouldn't be necessary to show the first movie first. I haven't seen the first movie in years myself. I was fully planning to go to the library and get it, but then this $@*(#&$ illness kept me out of commission. I'm still trying to get over the cough part. That can go on for weeks.
I kind of want to show her The Ghost of Maiden's Peak. It's one of my favorite episodes. All nice and creepy, and it ends with everybody happy, which isn't usual! I really do think that years ago I showed her the part with Jessie exclaiming, "If you're not here, at least come out and tell us!" ROTFLOL. I also want to show her parts of Holy Matrimony! and Meowth Rules!, although I hate to show her the part where Meowth betrays Jessie and James. But things just wouldn't have the proper impact if she didn't see that scene.
I've also been pondering what my top 10 list of favorite episodes would look like. All three of those would be on it, of course, and Pikachu Re-Volts, and Pokemon Shipwreck, and probably Go West, Young Meowth. Maybe Clefairy Tales, because it's just so wonderfully cracky and priceless. LOL. And A Scare in the Air. That is just such a fun episode! Might have to ponder on the others. I thought I had one other chosen, but now I can't recall which one that would have been. Oh, I think it was the Porygon episode, actually. Such a shame that one couldn't have been altered so it could air in America. I just adored it! Ash and company saving Team Rocket, and them being grateful, even Jessie, and running off instead of pulling a betrayal, like Johto probably would have done.... And Ash's visions of a sick computer were hilariously endearing. LOL. And made me think of Z/Vincent, of course.
That makes nine episodes altogether, I think. Still one other slot to figure out. I debated on the inclusion of Pokemon Emergency, as I actually liked that introduction for Team Rocket. Unlike many other early episodes, they were not abusive jerks to each other in it. But I don't think I like it so much it would make the cut above other episodes, especially with that rather extended and glorified electrocution scene. I always have to look away during that. As for which episode holds the actual top position, it's probably The Ghost of Maiden's Peak.
Then the inevitable question is, least favorite episodes. The Sabrina saga, definitely, and the Ponyta race episode. And Beauty and the Beach, whether cut or uncut, would make that list. Oh, and The Bridge Bike Gang. Ugh. Ash and company flying across the bridge and knocking Team Rocket into the water is one of my least favorite scenes ever. They could have drowned! Not sure if I dislike any Orange Islands episodes enough to dump them in the least favorite list. Maybe Bound for Trouble. It had some nice Pikachu and Meowth scenes, but it wasn't very flattering to Meowth's friendship with Jessie and James and was overall a disappointment.
Also pondered on how James is actually pretty snippy/holds his own in the earliest episodes, instead of being submissive for Jessie to push around. I wonder what prompted the personality change, both in real-life and within the show's verse. I've debated on addressing the change in his voice and why he started speaking with an upper-class accent, but then I'd probably also have to address why Meowth didn't have as strong a Brooklyn accent in the early episodes, so it might be better to leave that problem alone.
One thing I love between seasons 1 and 2 is that James has some positive character development from one to the other. In season 2 he seems to be both a kinder person and has started standing up to Jessie again instead of always being pushed around. I don't think he abuses Meowth in season 2. In any case, he looks alarmed/worried when Jessie starts in during A Scare in the Air. And I love when he's angry at Jessie's ingratitude in The Stun Spore Detour. I wonder what happened after he and Meowth ran off with her at the end. I picture them giving her a stern talking to.
And I remembered a vague plunnie that I've forgotten a couple of times. After watching It's a Wonderful Life again, I kind of like the thought of trying a version with James. I don't know if that would really work, though.

Movie 2 might be a good place to start, especially since it's clearly your favorite :)
*hugs for the illness*
Ghost of Maiden's Peak is definitely one of my favorites, too! Though I do wish they had made Brock a bit less willing to go with the ghost; where he yells at Ash and Misty to let him go was originally him snapping out of it and saying "You guys!?" in the Japanese, and I really wish they could have kept that. And I wonder if between this ep and Lavender Town, Brock might have developed some sort of ghost phobia as a result. He point-blank doesn't trust Haunter, and fast forward to Hoenn, he has a minor freakout when some random passerby tells them that a place is haunted.
And ooh, gosh, yes, the Porygon ep was awesome! I really hope that the English voice track can, at least, see the light of day at some point.
And ooh, now to think of my top/bottom 10... That ep with the West Side Story movie and Pikachu and Raichu playing Bernardo and Riff will always hold a place in my heart, so it's gotta be there. Ghost of Maiden's Peak, of course. Counting the Shipwreck trilogy as one, that's there. The Unown ep in S5 I adore to bits, too. The Stantler ep has to be there. The Shuckle Juice ep, too; not only humorous, but it was great to see Brock excited about something other than girls and then learning a valuable lesson by the end of it. Control Freak, too. The Ninetales ep in S5, the two eps prior to Johto where it was all four of Ash-tachi together, and, lame animation aside, Ash and Kiawe battling Misty and Brock with their Mega Evolutions.
Least favorites... honestly, I have a hard time rewatching eps where Ash releases Pokémon. Though that's because I find them sad rather than frustrating. But yeah, Beauty and the Beach is just... a boatload of "WTH." And I found the bratty kid in "Bout with a Sprout" super annoying. And of course, the ep where Ash, Misty, and Brock split up--end of an era, that was... "Hatching a Plan" in s5 was another "WTH" ep with Jessie and James... painting Meowth's backside to look like a Phanpy? ...No. Just... no.
And that's an interesting interpretation of James's voice change! And yes, some definite character development there!
Ooh, I'd love to see your take on the Wonderful Life plot!

Yeah, that's what I'd like to do. My only real hesitation would be wondering whether that "Krabbies" joke would sail over her head or if she'd get it. Definitely WTH that they put that in there. But I'd hate to avoid the movie just for that.
**hugs back.**
Gah, they definitely should have kept that! And I wouldn't be surprised if Brock has some kind of ghost/supernatural phobia. It bothered me that even after Ash almost died in the tower when Brock wasn't there, he still didn't want to get involved in supernatural goings-on in the next episode. He was apparently more worried about what the supernatural stuff would do to him than Ash. A phobia could make it a little easier to accept his feelings.
I sure hope so! It will probably release on some collector's set for a milestone. It would be neat if that would be for the 25th anniversary and not way in the future like the 50th!
Which episode is that? I remember the Nidoran West Side Story parody, but not another one. Well, not one with Pikachu and Raichu having starring roles, anyway. There's the movie one in season 1, but that seemed to be based more on Romeo and Juliet.
I did like the Stantler episode, basically! The trio getting freaked out near the beginning was fun. I debate on whether I think Brock should have kept the Stantler. The Stantler did seem too young, really, and yet the mother seemed kind of neglectful. She lost him at the beginning, and then she fights Team Rocket but doesn't even do anything when he falls! WTH? So maybe he would have been better off with Brock than his mother.
I remember the Shuckle Juice one! Especially after reading the kiddie book. I'll have to look that episode up again. Classic crack, and I definitely loved the lesson Brock learned! The Shuckle Juice seemed WTH from the beginning.
They are definitely sad. Gah. I was surprised when re-watching Bye, Bye, Butterfree that there wasn't any apparent upset on Ash's part that he would have to leave Butterfree until the end. He seemed to know he would, since there wasn't any surprise "Wait a minute!" moment. I wonder why he couldn't just take both Butterfree with him. And oh yeah, the brat in Sprout was so frustrating! I felt bad for the Bellsprout. And it raised a question ... if he had caught Pikachu, would Pikachu belong to him? Ash seemed so worried about the thought of him catching Pikachu, like that would suddenly invalidate Ash's ownership. And WTH, I remember that Phanpy episode. What.
Well, I didn't give an interpretation of the voice change, but I wonder if he decided to start speaking that way as some kind of defense mechanism, using it as something to hide behind.
Thanks! The question is whether it would even work with James.

Yeah, the phobia would help. Though Brock did voice his concerns about Ash ("What if Haunter is the one controlling you?") and did go with him in the end. Maybe that's something I can address in the post-Sabrina ficlit idea.
Yesss, it would!
Yeah, that was the ep. I assumed it was more West Side Story based, especially since Wigglytuff survives a la Maria rather than dying like Juliet.
Indeed, it really felt like Brock was more invested in the fawn's well-being! Of course, I had him keep him in the old Gateway fics; I should do a redo of that one, even if it's just a blurb...
Yes, LOL!
Yeah, that was strange--or maybe he was just trying not to think of it. The think about "catching" Pikachu is a headscratcher because literally like a few eps before, it was shown that if you throw a Pokéball at a Pokémon belonging to someone else, it won't go in the ball and just bounces off (Misty tried catching a Marril that had gotten separated from her trainer--the ball bounced off and the Marril started bawling). So Ash worrying was absolutely pointless. And yup, bleh.
Ahh.
Hmm... good question.

That would be a great thing to address!
Ahh, good point. I was thinking it was Romeo and Juliet because I thought it was mentioned that it was families warring instead of gangs. Maybe it was a mash-up of both, LOL. I loved when characters observed in-canon that the plot was familiar. **snerk.**
That would be neat!
Yeah, I could picture Ash trying not to think of it. And how weird indeed! Yet another continuity fail. I did see the Marril episode and it was cute.
Then the question would be why he'd decide he needed a defense mechanism. All in all, it's kind of a mess. LOL. The voice change, the personality change ... I don't know how to explain it in-canon. Maybe I should just leave it alone and chalk it up to people in real-life not being sure what the character should be like in the early episodes.
And what would prompt him to get so discouraged he'd need to be shown stuff. I'm thinking either Jessie and Meowth would have to be hurt or they'd had a horrible argument with James and he felt discouraged and worthless. Oh, it would be cute if Miyamoto was the one showing him stuff!
