Yeah, anime and manga are usually always very different, especially in older titles, and YGO is no exception. The anime removed most of the grotesque violence or softened some scenes. Sometimes characters' personalities are changed, usually in ways I like better. Among other things, the villain Marik doesn't kill his servants in the anime, and Yami Bakura is masochistic in the manga but not the anime. And the anime has filler arcs. Fans' opinion is divided on them, but I love them. About the only things I like better in the manga are the intro arc for Duke Devlin and that it shows more often that Yami Bakura feels very protective of Ryou Bakura.
The rules can be confusing, definitely! One nice thing about Duel Links is it helps you remember the rules. :)
