So Ladyamberjo has been so thrilled and excited with the miniseries adaptation of Good Omens, and I've wanted to give it a try since the friendship sounded absolutely amazingly squeeful. With my Amazon Prime trial, I had the chance to try it, and I binged it yesterday and today. (I first tried it last week, but stalled because of something I wasn't comfortable with, but skipping past some of that enabled me to proceed.)

It's just ... wow. The friendship was indeed amazing and beautiful and so very squeeable, and everything was so intense, and the characters felt so real and I really came to care about them and wanted to see everyone get a happy ending.

And honestly? Everyone who deserved it did. It was just so, so incredibly satisfying! It's such a feel-good ending that really left me happy and buoyed up! I don't even like to say much more than this, because it was just so amazing and beautiful and I feel like anyone who wants to see it needs to experience the ending for themselves.

The things I didn't like/was uncomfortable with were the concept of Satanic nuns and the portrayal of every angel other than Aziraphale. Ugh, they were awful! But thankfully, they mostly stayed in the background, and as for the Satanic nuns, they weren't around very long.

I also wasn't too happy about the girl and the guy having sex under the bed after knowing each other for so short a time, but at least they didn't show much of it, I skipped over it thanks to the Fast Forward button, and they did end up genuinely caring about each other.

Overall, I am really happy I got the chance to see this. Part of me would like to read the book, but it sounds like some of the things I loved most may be TV series only?

I read a post that was basically "Good Omens is just Crowley repeatedly submitting to the mortifying ordeal of being known and Aziraphale repeatedly eviscerating him for it every single time until the world fails to end" and I'm like.... yep. that's them

it's really just the perfect miniseries for me, revolving around these two. i love them. thank you for coming to my ted talk

You don’t understand! We’ve been waiting literal DECADES for this to be made...and against all odds, after literal decades of waiting, IT DIDN’T DISAPPOINT. It lived up to and exceeded the hopes and dreams of all the tired adults who carried this book around high school in their backpacks. One million billion blessings upon Neil Gaiman and dear departed Terry Pratchett.

...it really is amazing, though, isn’t it? I’m still a wreck over certain scenes, and still squealing and kicking my feet and/or clasping my hands in awwwww over others.

Well, see, er, the thing about Anathema sleeping with Newt almost immediately is, she’s been living as a professional descendant all her life, and everything up until Armageddon was predicted by Agnes Nutter. Agnes predicted she’d meet her young man that day and have “welp the world is ending soooo”-sex, ergo, she, uh...did...that. There’s actually a hilarious bit in the book where Newt’s hopeful for another go-around and Anathema bluntly tells him “it says we only do it once,” and then hands over her notes to PROVE it to him, with several generations of ancestors having scribbled words of encouragement in the margins. Newt is more than a little embarrassed.

I fully endorse reading the book! That and The Last Unicorn have been the two top spots on Laj’s List of Recommended Books for the past decade and a half, AT LEAST. There ARE a lot of scenes that are series-only, but there’s a lot in the book that didn’t make it into the series, too, and, well, there’s a lot of stuff in the series that you shriek with glee over ONLY if you’ve read the book. At the very least, you’ll appreciate all the Queen. And Elvis working at a fast food joint.
